UAWC and Palestinian Peasants’ Movement implemented a solidarity visit to farmers in eastern of Khanyounis.

The Advocacy Department in Union of Agricultural Work Committees- UAWC with Palestinian Peasants’ Movement-PPM implemented a solidarity field visit to farmers in the boarder and eastern areas of Khanyounis governorate. Tens of the local committees members of UAWC and PPM participated in this visit to the farmers in their farmlands in Al-Fukhary and listened to their suffers and obstacles they faced as a result of the Israeli Occupation Forces policies related to repeated and continuous attacks and shooting operations, in addition to the damage caused by the siege and the economic conditions experienced by the residents of the Gaza Strip.

The farmers demanded UAWC and other organizations to work on solving their problems related to salinity and lack of water, and the absence of agricultural roles, controls and plans governing the nature and quality of agriculture crops, as well as the lack of protection of farmers in the harvest seasons and the failure to determine the prices of vegetables and crops, which causes great losses to them as is the case recently. The continuation of this reality will force them to abandon their farm lands and farming.

Advocacy director in UAWC Mr. Saad Eddin Ziada said: UAWC will not let down and leave the farmers alone and will keep trying using its possibilities to alleviate them and respond to their demands and needs, especially with regard to the provision of irrigation water and land rehabilitation.

About the national policies and plans and protecting the farmers, Ziada said: that requires a unified and common work between farmers and the agricultural association and unions to make pressure on the decision makers to adopt agricultural plans and policies suitable to the reality of agricultural and water sectors in Gaza Strip, in addition to adopt decisions to protect the local crops, support the farmers, develop their reality and activate the emergency and compensation fund.

It is worth to mention that UAWC carried out such visits and meetings permanently in all governorates, in order to be in touch and direct relation with farmers and knowing their problems and suffers in order to identify their priorities and needs and work to solve and reduce what is possible. This comes within the framework of supporting and strengthening the presence of farmers in their lands and enhancing their access to land and water and their sources of livelihood.
