UAWC celebrates World Environment Day by cleaning up a landfill posing a health hazard for thousands of citizens
On Monday, the Union of Agricultural Work Committees (UAWC) organized a volunteer activity in Jenin for World Environment Day (June 5th) with the participation of 50 volunteers from Jenin and La Via Campesina Palestine.
The activity included cleaning up a landfill that is adjacent to a well supplying water to 40,000 residents in the villages of Siris, El Jadida, Meithalun, Sir, Al-Jarba, Misilyah and Sanur. The well has a pumping capacity of 135 cups per hour and is also connected to the unified water network of the Water Authority, which entails an increase in the number of areas and villages that benefit from the well.
The municipality of Meithalun started the process of cleaning up the landfill, as it can lead to bacterial and biological contamination if left unattended. In cooperation with UAWC, the area was cleaned up and trees were planted as the municipality aims to convert the landfill into a park for the residents of the village and thus prevent water pollution.
UAWC and the La Via Campesina Palestine are working together to commemorate World Environment Day on an annual basis through the implementation of events that would lead to significant potential impacts in areas where the events are held. Additionally, the UAWC team regularly visits numerous sites that may be selected for such activities and are evaluated according to the identified needs and urgency for action.
