La Via Campesina Palestine and UAWC celebrate International Women's Day in the northern Jordan Valley
On International Women's Day this Thursday, La Via Campesina Palestine and the Union of Agricultural Work Committees (UAWC) organized a day in support of the women of Al-Faresyeh region at Al-Maleh wadi in the northern Jordan Valley. Approximately 100 women from numerous governorates across the West Bank participated in the group visit. Mostly women associations and cooperatives who are members of Via Campesina Palestine joined the celebration to meet with local communities, extend their support for women and their families, and learn first-hand about the challenges they face. Demolition orders, confiscation notices, and evictions are measures used by Israeli forces in an effort to displace residents of the region due to the Israeli army’s expropriation of the valley for use as a military practice. Ahlam Ishtayyeh, a member of La Via Campesina coordinating committee, stressed that the celebration of Women's Day in Al-Faresyeh region of the Jordan Valley represents a true celebration of women's day by being alongside women who exemplify resistance against Israeli occupation of the land. The Palestinian Valley constitutes the food basket of Palestine, yet Israeli forces control 90% of the area. The valley alone produces 50% of the total agricultural products in Palestine. However, 37 Israeli settlements were constructed in the valley, many of its villages are continuously subject to demolition orders issued by the Israeli government aiming to annex the Jordan valley and evict its Palestinian population.
