Ramallah, Palestine – October 9, 2025
Today, the Union of Agricultural Work Committees (UAWC) launched its annual olive-picking campaign under the title “BAQA” (بَقاء) — an Arabic word meaning remaining — symbolizing steadfastness, rootedness, and resistance in the face of occupation and settler violence.
More than 145 volunteers from 15 countries have arrived in Palestine to participate in the harvest, standing in solidarity with Palestinian farmers during one of the most important and vulnerable agricultural seasons of the year.
The campaign focuses on safeguarding Palestine’s olive groves, a symbol of resilience and heritage, in the face of increasing challenges. Volunteers will assist with the olive harvest, protect vulnerable groves, and document violations in areas threatened by Israeli settler violence and land confiscation. The BAQA campaign emphasizes the power of remaining rooted to the land, both literally and symbolically, in defiance of ongoing displacement efforts.
Olive cultivation is a cornerstone of Palestinian life and economy. With over 10 million olive trees across the occupied territories, the olive sector is vital for over 100,000 Palestinian families. Yet, farmers face significant threats, including land confiscations, settler attacks, and restrictions on access. Since 1967, 800,000 olive trees have been uprooted, and tens of thousands more have been damaged by violence or neglect. In the 2023 harvest alone, over 278,000 trees were destroyed, leading to US$10 million in losses for farmers. Ongoing restrictions and violence have made olive harvesting more dangerous, with 3,100 trees burned or cut in 2024 alone.
The campaign’s goals are to support the harvest, protect olive groves, and raise awareness about the ongoing struggles Palestinian farmers face. However, volunteers and farmers will be at risk of harassment, violence, and access restrictions, especially in areas close to settlements or military zones. The word BAQA symbolizes resilience. It reflects the commitment of Palestinian farmers and international supporters to “remain” on the land, preserving the olive trees that are an enduring part of Palestinian identity.
