Bank of Palestine and UAWC sign a mutual cooperation agreement to support the Local Seed Bank

Ramallah – Bank of Palestine offered the Union of Agricultural Work Committees a donation to support the first established Local Seed Bank in Palestine, aiming to support Palestinian farmers, activate the agricultural sector, and develop agricultural crops and productivity in the West Bank.

This is the first cooperation between the two parties, starting with the support of the Local Seed Bank, the activities of the project will start in Hebron city and will include renting a piece of land to reproduce local seeds, conducting a workshop on the subject of local seeds to promote its importance agriculturally and culturally, and finally to develop the Local Seed Bank’s laboratory.

The two sides also discussed prospects of joint cooperation to promote local products produced by agricultural cooperatives, and to promote the services that Bank of Palestine offers for the farmers in the West Bank and Gaza, especially the facilities offered for green projects that benefit a lot of farmers in the Palestinian villages, and that contribute to solving problems that face agriculture in some areas.

It is worth mentioning that the Local Seed Bank, that is located in Hebron and managed by UAWC, succeeded in reproducing and improving 37 species of vegetable crops and local field crops, where the genetic origins are conserved according to appropriate conservation mechanisms, with the goal of protecting them from the risk of extinction, and achieving food sovereignty for Palestinian farmers.

Bank of Palestine’s support for this project comes from its belief of the need to work on supporting Palestinian local agricultural products, and improving crops and productive projects that benefit all of the Palestinian society as part of a sustainability strategy.
